Soft Millet

SOFT MILLET (Dichanthelium acuminatum)

This furry “miniature switch grass” has an interesting life cycle. It flowers early in the year, dies down over the summer, and produces new rosettes in the fall, often flowering again. It does well in a wide range of soil types and moisture levels, but prefers areas with low competition – where vegetation is on the shorter/sparser side. Woolly panic grass is ranked S3 (vulnerable) in Manitoba. It is a larval food source for the tawny-edged skipper, and its seeds are an important food source for small birds.
