SLENDER PANIC GRASS (Dichanthelium xanthophysum)
This loosely-tufted, cool-season grass has an unusual trait for a panic grass – rather than spreading into a pyramidal shape, the branches are held tight against the stem. The leaves are relatively short (~6 inches) and quite wide (up to 1”). Previously classified as Panicum xanthophysum, it was moved to the genus Dichanthelium because it has two flowering periods – spring and late summer/fall. It is ranked S3 (vulnerable) in Manitoba where it reaches the northwest extent of its range.
Grows with balsam ragwort, crowfoot violet, American vetch, big bluestem, and June grass.
