HEMP DOGBANE (Apocynum cannabinum)
This moisture-loving plant gets its name from the strong reddish brown stem fibers that have long been used to make cordage. The leaves bleed a sticky white milk when damaged. In the fall, the leaves turn bright yellow, wonderfully complementing the red stems. Plants are rhizomatous and often form colonies. Hemp dogbane is the exclusive host of the iridescent green dogbane beetle.
