WILD LICORICE (Glycorrhiza lepidota)

This clonal legume is usually found in patches in moist prairies. Spikes of white pea-type flowers develop from the leaf axils on long stalks. Look closely at the undersides of the leaves and you’ll find they’re covered in resinous dots. Tiny bean-like seeds are dispersed in short pods covered in hook-tipped bristles The roots (rhizomes) have medicinal properties, but lack the pleasant flavour of the domesticated licorice, Glycorrhiza alba, which is sweet and soothing.
