Bold and beautiful, with either magenta or blue-purple flowers crowding the tops of robust, clasping-leaved plants, it’s a wonder that anyone would think they could improve the appearance of New England aster. Yet cultivars abound. As with many asters and goldenrods, this is an important late-season food source for many insects.
