Fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium)
Beautiful spikes of large pink flowers open from the bottom up. The flowers are primarily pollinated by long-tongued bees, such as bumblebees and leafcutter bees. The leaves provide food for a host of other insects, including the caterpillars of the white-lined and galium sphinx moths. Fireweed will spread quickly to fill in an empty space, but will back down to competition from other species. It prefers cool to warm temperatures and will protect itself during hot spells by going dormant.
