Thimbleweed

The flowers aren’t especially attractive, but the seed heads sure are!

THIMBLEWEED (Anemone cylindrical)

Thimbleweed looks similar to cut-leaf anemone, but the flowers are white, not pink. I don’t find the flowers especially attractive, personally, but I love the seed heads! When ripe, the tightly packed, cylindrical seed heads loosen up and gradually release their soft “wool”-encased seeds, which are known for their absorbent quality. Seeds often remain on the stems well into the winter, prolonging their attractiveness.

Grows well with little bluestem, black-eyed susan, northern bedstraw, stiff goldenrod and tall meadowrue.
