Fringed loosestrife is in a unique subset of plants that produce oil instead of nectar as a floral reward. This particular species is the life-line of the dark-legged loosestrife oil bee, which depends solely on fringed loosestrife flower oil to feed and protect its young. Rhizomatous and colony-forming, fringed loosestrife makes an attractive shade-tolerant ground cover.

Grows with star sedge, kidney-leaved buttercup, marsh hedge-nettle, heal-all, and jewelweed.
