Boneset

This rare species has the coolest leaves!

BONESET (Eupatorium perfoliatum)

Joe-pye weed-esque, but with white fluffy flowers. I love this plant because I think it has the coolest leaves – each pair of opposing leaves is joined at the stem, making it look like a single leaf has been pierced by the stem (right photo). Though notoriously bitter, boneset is known to provide relief from achy fevers. Ranked S3, vulnerable, in Manitoba.

Grows with flat-topped goldenrod, panicled aster, joe-pye weed, tall meadowrue, prairie loosestrife, bog muhly, and fowl manna grass.

Flower Colour: white
Life Cycle: perennial
Sun Exposure: part shade to shade
Bloom Period: July – September
Height: 1 – 4 feet
Soil: moist
