CULVER’S ROOT (Veronicastrum virginicum)
A stately plant that produces strikingly beautiful, pure white flower spikes. It’s an insect magnet, attracting a wide range of bees, butterflies, flies and spiders. The leaves are just as attractive, appearing in whorls of 3 – 6. Culver’s root is listed as threatened in Manitoba, so it is protected by law. (Since local native plant nurseries were growing it before it was listed, it was grandfathered in, but wild populations remain under legislative protection.)
